The Internship Effect: How the Her Sorority Journey Internship has Impacted Us

Aubrey and Taylor were originally brought onto the Her Sorority Journey team for the 2024 summer internship but stayed on throughout their final year at their respective universities. Aubrey is a student at Missouri State University studying Special Needs Education, and Taylor is a student at the University of North Carolina Wilmington studying Psychology. Both women have served their collegiate chapters and Panhellenic communities in many ways over the past four years, so their experience and knowledge have been invaluable to the Her Sorority Journey team. The extended internship is ending as the pair gets ready to graduate next month and start their new chapters. Continue reading to learn about their experience and leave inspired to apply for the 2025 summer internship!

What was only supposed to be a two-month internship that I applied for “just to see if I would get it” is now ending 10 months later, and I couldn't be more grateful. It was the summer going into my senior year and I was still unsure what I wanted to do for the three months I was home, so I had been applying for any opportunity that came my way. I was currently serving as chapter president at the time of my application, but I had a lot of doubts about whether I was equipped for the resource intern role because I had never done anything like it. I am so thankful to the Her Sorority Journey team who believed in me and decided to give me a chance because it turned out to be one of the coolest experiences in my college career.

I had only been following Her Sorority Journey on Instagram for a few months, so as soon as I was brought onto the team, I did a deep dive into all of the resources offered and past postings so that I could really get a feel and understanding of the company's mission and foundation. This also helped me navigate what topics had already been addressed, and where we could go from there. Meeting with the team for the first time was so exciting because I could tell immediately that I was going to learn a lot from each of the women and that we’d work well together as a team. Slowly over the summer, my doubts began to fade away, and I believed in myself more and more as I grew to understand Her Sorority Journey and its vision as well as the skills that Cassie and Maddy taught me for my specific role as resource intern.

I had the opportunity to meet Cassie in person at a convention for my national organization, and we were able to meet up afterward to connect and get to know each other. The conversation that Cassie and I shared was much different than any conversation that I had with past employers. She was personable, and I could tell she was invested in what I had to say. Throughout the rest of my time in the internship, I felt supported, encouraged, empowered, and confident in my work and leadership as chapter president. The internship experience looked nothing like I had imagined in the best way possible. When considering if you should apply, don’t let the doubts creep in - just go for it, and it might turn into something unexpected.

As I sit and reflect on my time as the social media intern for Her Sorority Journey, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity this team gave me and the knowledge I gained through this position. Almost a year ago, when I was applying for this role, I had just begun my term as the Vice President of Public Relations for my Panhellenic executive board. I had met Cassie only two months prior at the AFLV Central conference and was immediately drawn to the brand's mission, which led me to instantly follow all the HSJ social media accounts. When the internship application was announced, I hesitated. While I had a passion for social media and experience in various areas within the field, I wasn’t sure if I had what it took to land this position, or if I could effectively use my sorority experience to create resources that would educate and empower women across the country.

I still remember my shock when I received the call that I had been selected. Instantly, my mind was racing with content ideas, and I couldn’t wait for my first meeting, where I would meet the rest of the team, including my co-intern, Aubrey. From that very first team meeting, I knew the dynamic and atmosphere were something I would thrive in. Each week, I gained invaluable knowledge from Cassie during our one-on-one meetings, diving deeper into the brand and refining our social strategy to maximize engagement and reach as many sorority women as possible. I always looked forward to our team meetings, where we not only learned from each other but also shared our unique sorority experiences from across the country.

As summer came to an end, I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to extend my contract with Her Sorority Journey. Now, nearly a year later, my passion for encouraging sorority women is as strong as ever. The knowledge and experience I’ve gained from this role have been invaluable. Being able to speak about teamwork, meeting deadlines, and creating meaningful resources for women nationwide helped me stand out in graduate school interviews as I prepare for my next steps post-graduation. However, what I cherish most from this experience is the sense of community and the friendships I’ve built. This team became my support system through the challenges of Panhellenic recruitment and everything in between throughout my senior year. I can’t thank Her Sorority Journey enough for all it has given me this past year. While I’m sad to step away from this role, I’m incredibly excited to watch the brand continue to grow with the new intern class. If you’re thinking about applying, just do it! You never know what the next three months (or even a year) could have in store for you.
