We spend so much time before recruitment preparing what we’re going to wear and what we’re going to say, that we forget to prepare our minds for this intense, emotional experience. Recruitment presents challenges for everyone involved, but there are ways we can all protect our peace and minimize the mental strain. By starting the conversation about mental health before recruitment begins, we can help prevent burnout before it happens.

Although you may be one of the newest or youngest members of your chapter, that doesn’t mean you have to wait to be a leader or create the community you’re looking for! Chapter leadership doesn’t have to start when you get on executive council — it can start by being confident in yourself as a PNM.

In this blog, you’ll hear from two dedicated voices: a campus fraternity/sorority advisor who oversees the broader recruitment experience, and a local chapter advisor who works closely with an individual chapter. Together, they share what it’s really like to support recruitment from different angles by balancing logistics, leadership, and those unforgettable moments that make recruitment so special.

I am the public relations chairwoman for my chapter – I not only oversee the social media accounts for my chapter, but also all of our brand collaborations. I love this role that I have been given more than I can explain, but there are definitely times where I wish the members of my chapter knew what was really going on behind the scenes. 

We all know that one of the best parts of joining a sorority is the sisterhood and the relationships you build within your own chapter. But something that’s often overlooked is the opportunity to form connections and sisterly bonds with women in other chapters. 

When I first got to college and was looking for ways to get involved on campus, one of my biggest questions was, "How is joining a sorority different from joining any other campus organization or club?". Other campus organizations can have groups nationwide similar to Greek organizations, some may pertain more to my career path, and some may also have the philanthropic efforts that a sorority would bring. So what makes sorority so much different? 

How do we keep chapter members excited to come back ready for recruitment when we aren't on campus? How do we as an executive team continue to prepare for the fall, while many are juggling summer jobs and internships? Let’s talk about how to prioritize your time this summer to prepare your chapter for the fall, while still using your break as a break.

When considering if you should apply, don’t let the doubts creep in - just go for it, and it might turn into something unexpected. 

Fraternity and sorority leadership conferences are energetic; they are not stuffy conferences where you just sit and learn.

By making small but meaningful changes, we can build a community where every member feels valued, supported, and truly at home.

Our member's needs and wants should always be the focus of programming. Think of programming as a long-term tool for retention.

As a college senior, I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have built so many lasting friendships across Panhellenic.

What I found to help me when creating SMART goals is to think about it as a list of reminders, not rules.

You need BOTH transparency and confidentiality to cultivate trust, member buy in, create healthy boundaries, and sustain friendships.

The reasons you are running for a leadership position MATTER! Knowing your WHY will protect you from burnout & your chapter from instability

Your big should be your cheerleader, your biggest fan, and your advocate, but most importantly, your big should be a mentor!
