Behind the Scenes Look Into Conference Season

When I think back on fraternity and sorority life conference season, the first thing I feel is immense gratitude for the people who organize and facilitate the transformative gathering of student leaders and professionals.

Imagine being surrounded by thousands of fraternity and sorority life members from across the country, all experiencing similar challenges, triumphs, and ideas. That’s what makes these conferences so special. They create an environment where diverse perspectives flourish, where the “this is how it’s always been done” mindset is challenged, and where people who care just as much as you do about the fraternal experience come together to make it just a little bit better.

I’ve been fortunate to attend the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) conference both as a participant and as an undergraduate intern. As an attendee, I left the weekend feeling energized and inspired. The educational sessions, led by campus professionals and speakers, challenged my thinking and motivated me to lead my team in new ways. Interactions with other student leaders sparked fresh ideas in me, and my Panhellenic council. We came home with bold, game-changing ideas for our community. We were able to meet leaders from other campuses who had faced similar roadblocks allowing us to bring back new strategies and implement real change. Conferences are a great place to interact with speakers and companies like Her Sorority Journey, which you could bring to your own campus to energize your community. Keynote speakers set the tone for the day, they give you ideas to reflect on and get excited about.

Serving as a conference intern gave me an even deeper appreciation for the volunteers and staff who make these events possible. I got a behind-the-scenes look at how much heart and dedication goes into creating a weekend that students will carry with them for a lifetime.

The staff works tirelessly to ensure that every detail contributes to an unforgettable experience. They know that while not everyone will go on to work in fraternity and sorority life, the lessons learned at AFLV will serve students in any career. Their goal is to educate, inspire, and create an inclusive, motivating environment, as well as to make sure attendees have fun in the process. The volunteers take time away from their jobs and families to drive the mission forward. They coordinate speakers, facilitate events, and bring energy to every session, ensuring that every student feels seen and valued. AFLV is an all-hands-on-deck process, there is so much care and love that goes into each aspect of the conference. The interns, and my crew, were a mix of undergraduate and graduate students from across the country, coming together to make the conference run smoothly. It was more than just an internship; it was a life-changing experience. We worked long days, tackled challenges, and learned how to collaborate with people we had just met. We found joy in even the smallest tasks, built friendships that will last a lifetime, and engaged with incredible students and professionals. Throughout the weekend, AFLV staff and volunteers constantly thanked the interns for their hard work. But in reality, I felt like the lucky one. Being able to help give students the same transformative experience I had the year before was incredibly rewarding.

There is a special kind of joy that fills the venue space when AFLV takes over. From the excitement of students rushing into the opening session to the powerful history shared at the National Black Greek Leadership Conference, the energy is unmatched. AFLV is a place where students feel truly understood because the person sitting next to them is walking the same journey. Fraternity and sorority leadership conferences are energetic; they are not stuffy conferences where you just sit and learn. There’s palpable excitement in the air, and there is a beautiful mixture of learning and fellowship.

As I reflect on my conference experiences I get excited about what these conferences will look like for me as I enter the Fraternity and Sorority Life field as a Graduate Assistant. I cant wait to watch the students I am advising have the same incredible opportunities I had as a participant. Getting to sit back and watch AFLV energize them the same way it did for me will be a beautiful full circle moment as I enter my career.

If you’ve ever attended a fraternity and sorority leadership conference, you know the magic I’m talking about. And if you haven’t, I hope you get the chance. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after your undergraduate years, one that will shape your leadership, your friendships, and the way you approach challenges for years to come.
